Mission Statement
Danville Public Schools Child Nutrition Department will provide nutritious, appealing and balanced meals and excellent customer service to all students to encourage academic success and promote the development of healthy food habits for a lifetime.
Overview
The Danville Public Schools Child Nutrition Department participates in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, which are federally administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and by the Virginia Department of Education at the state level. Meals, food and beverages served at our schools meet state and federal requirements based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet their health and nutrition needs. In our 15 schools, 84 dedicated foodservice professionals serve approximately 2,500 breakfasts and 5,000 lunches daily.
I.W. Taylor, Glenwood, Park Avenue and Woodberry Hills Elementary Schools participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, which encourages healthy eating habits through the introduction of a variety of produce which students otherwise might not have the opportunity to enjoy. Glenwood and Woodrow Wilson Elementary Schools participate in the Provision 2 Breakfast Program, which provides free breakfast for all children in those schools. Glenwood Elementary School has applied for and earned the Bronze, and most recently the Silver Award in the Governor’s Scorecard, a statewide program to recognize those schools that achieve specific high standards in nutrition and physical activity. Our department has also begun to implement more of the standards of nutrition found in the Healthier US School Challenge in developing our monthly menus. This is a voluntary initiative established in 2004 to recognize those schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity.
