September 28, 2011 - World Milk Day

Glenwood Elementary celebrated World School Milk Day this year! School Nutrition Manager, Ms. Shelton provided students with a chance to have their own "Milk Mustache". The students were very excited to have their photo snapped! They were also pleasantly surprised by the tasty goodness of the milk mustache mixture and begged for more. Students also participated in a contest to show their coloring talents on a picture of a dairy cow and barn, which were displayed around the cafeteria. Got Milk? Glenwood Elementary sure does!

August 29, 2011 – Forest Hills Cafeteria Gets a New Look!

On June 18th, several Forest Hills families came together and undertook painting the cafeteria. They worked all day, painting the green and white background, which would be the canvas for Debbie Cross’s amazing art. She worked on this beautiful and inspiring mural throughout the summer. We love the themes of community and global awareness, as well as the bear paws, which make it uniquely Forest Hills! We know the students love it too! A BIG “Thank You” goes out to Debbie Cross, The Dodson Family, The Byrnes Family, Paula and Joe Perez, Kanchan and Devy Clark, Shay Clark, Amy and Ethan Casteel, and Melissa Ayuso. We appreciate the efforts and hard work of all these families on this beautification project!

March 2, 2011 – Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Tuesday was what would be Dr. Seuss’ 107th birthday! To celebrate, all of the elementary school cafeterias in the district, as well as the Gibson Middle School cafeteria, served green eggs and ham (on biscuits) for breakfast. Several school nutrition professionals decorated their serving lines (and their heads!), with Cat in the Hat and other Dr. Seuss related items during breakfast. The schools featured in these photos are W. Townes Lea Elementary, Glenwood Elementary, Forest Hills Elementary, and E. A. Gibson Middle School. What a great way for school nutrition staff to help send the message that reading is fun! A little Who told us that Ms. Parker, the media specialist at W. Townes Lea, was seen eating her green eggs to celebrate the day!

November 29, 2010 - Student Menu Planning in Action!

Ms. Farmer, school nutrition manager for George Washington High School, lets the students from different classes create the lunch menu for one day each month. On Monday, November 29, she enlisted the help of Ms. Abbott’s 3rd period Earth Science class to choose what would be on the menu for Wednesday, December 8th. Ms. Farmer first discussed the importance of eating right and encouraged the students to choose a meal that was healthy and nutritious. And they sure did! The menu will feature Baked or BBQ Chicken, Tossed Salad, Macaroni and Cheese, Turnip Greens and a Roll. For dessert, they will have their choice of Apple, Cherry or Peach Cobbler. YUM!

As you can imagine, working with students to create the menu can have its challenges. We asked Ms. Farmer a few questions about this process. Click here to read the interview!

November 19, 2010 - New Product Testing at Gibson Middle School!

On Friday, Mr. Richardson, the school nutrition manager, invited the Junior Honor Society to participate in a new product testing to help promote school breakfast. The new products included several different cereal bars, two flavors of Pop Tarts, and grab and go packages of reduced sugar cereals and graham crackers. The students were given a taste of each food and a form to rate the items. There was a whole lot of tasting going on! After all the products were sampled, the students ranked their three favorite products in hopes that they will appear as new choices in the cafeteria. After the tasting and rating, the students were all smiles when Mr. Richardson let each student choose one of the products to have for a snack!

November 13, 2010 - National Sandwich Day

In honor of National Sandwich Day on November 3rd, all of the schools served sandwiches for lunch! As a special event to celebrate the day, both Johnson and Woodrow Wilson Elementary Schools held an election where students voted on their favorite sandwich. One teacher at Johnson was also in the spirit as she and her students built a “giant sandwich”! Healthy sandwich tips were posted along the serving line. The winning sandwich was…Chicken Patty for both schools! Runners up were hamburgers and ham sandwich for Johnson and PB&J and ham sandwich for Woodrow Wilson.
