The Title I Parent Resource Center is located in the library at Grove Park Preschool, 1070 South Main Street. Title I parents and their elementary school age children (Pre K-5) may check out reading and math materials, educational videos, books, puzzles and electronic learning games (Geo Safari, Hooked on Phonics, Leap Frog Pads and their books) for use at home. Throughout the day, parents are encouraged to visit and use any of our 14 Internet equipped personal computers. Color copying/printing, scanning and digital cameras are just some of the features. Qualified staff is available to answer questions and provide technology assistance and assist the family with referrals to other community agencies. An increasingly popular feature is the Accelerated Reader Program which is a reading management software program designed to help students practice their reading, take a Reading Practice Quiz and receive a printout of their score summary or Top Point Earners Report to present to the teacher at their base school for credit.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., we offer the Title I Family Learning Program for Title I parents of elementary school age children (Pre K– 5) who are enrolled in the Danville Public Schools. This program is facilitated by two licensed elementary teachers. Parents and their children receive individualized instruction. Parents may study for their GED or brush up on basic academic and/or computer/keyboard skills. If you are a college student, the tutoring, study skills and test preparation assistance are ideal. In addition, your child will receive individual assistance with grade level instruction and/or homework. This is an excellent opportunity for a parent or guardian to work towards their educational goals and increase their child’s mastery of the Standards of Learning objectives. There is no cost for these services. Bus tokens are available for qualified participants.
The Home-School Connection is a unique feature of the Danville City Public Schools Title I Program. It offers resources from the Parent Resource Center, home visits, parent education workshops and classes. The Parent Resource Center staff makes home visits to identified families of Title I students. These visits focus on helping parents help their children become stronger learners. Parents:
- learn how their children are taught to read
- obtain ideas and suggestions to help their children improve their reading and math skills
- obtain ideas on helping their children with their homework
- receive calendars of activities to use with their children
- have an opportunity to discuss any concerns or problems dealing with their children's learning.
Parent workshops include general keyboarding/computer skills, use of the Internet, technical assistance in obtaining curriculum information regarding the local and state assessment program and parenting skills classes.
Information is regularly sent home discussing upcoming services and programs for Title I parents. In addition, the Title I Parent Resource Center provides a division-wide calendar of parental involvement activities available at the Parent Resource Center and Title I schools on the division website. Parents are encouraged to participate in their children's education on a regular basis ... at school, at home, and at the Parent Resource Center.
