Celebrating Dr. Seuss' Birthday

There was excitement in the air at W.W. Moore because of a special celebration held on March 2, 2011 in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. As a part of the celebration, the bulletin board (in the hallway) featured the many different books written by Dr. Seuss. Ms. Valerie Bagley, Literacy Coach, designed an interactive lesson featuring Dr. Seuss’ popular book, The Cat in the Hat. The students listened to an audiotape version of the book as they read along with the book projected on the Smart Board. The students really got into character by wearing special hats while listening to the story.
Additionally, Ms. Bagley shared information about Dr. Seuss’ life. She also explained how he used word families in his books to make them rhythmic, musical and fun. She taught that this style of writing was a trademark of Dr. Seuss. As a follow-up to this lesson, the students will get an opportunity to create their own literary work using this style of writing.
At the conclusion of the lesson, the students were given a Dr. Seuss book mark and certificate. The students enjoyed participating in this special celebration.
