Character Education

Character education is a strong component of our program because it fosters the development of learners who are responsible and productive citizens. Character education improves behavior, promotes academic success and impacts educational outcomes. Each month we highlight a specific character trait. Responsibility was the character trait highlighted for September. Mrs. Carolyn Kirby, Director of Secondary Education for Danville Public Schools, spoke to the students about the importance of taking responsibility for their actions. She had the students take a self-assessment to determine level of being responsible. The students were engaged in a lively discussion as Mrs. Kirby shared various stories with them. She concluded her presentation by challenging the students to take responsibility for thanking someone who had made a difference in their lives. She provided them with a note card and envelope to complete the assignment. The students enjoyed their time with Mrs. Kirby.
