Read Aloud to a Child

Read Aloud to a Child Day was celebrated at W. W. Moore on Friday, October 21, 2011. This activity was planned as part of the Virginia Read Aloud to a Child Week (October 16-23, 2011). Each teacher prepared a lesson in his/her discipline so they would read aloud to students during their class period. Reading aloud to students provides a positive reading role model, enhances vocabulary, and enhances fluency. The teachers made a concerted effort to develop reading activities that were creative and fun for all. Every student had at least six different teachers read to them. An array of reading activities ranged from listening to “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe in English class to listening to the story entitled “Dear Children of the Earth, a Letter from Home” by Schim Schimmel in Science class. The students also received a special treat when Mr. Brian Patty, Business and Technology Teacher read a portion of a story he is writing. Another group of students were read to during their lunch period. Read Aloud to a Child Day was a great way to end the week.
