2013 Spelling Bee

Westwood Middle School’s Spelling Bee was held Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria.
Mrs. Connie Wade, sixth grade English teacher at Westwood, introduced our participants. They were: sixth graders Shamaurie Henderson, Quntasia Miller, Meco Wiggins, Owen Martin, Ajavia Toomer, Michael Hale, and Devyn McIver; seventh graders Isaiah Carter, Santiago Hernandez, Tyrek Greene, and Anthony Martin; and eighth graders Tyasia Chavious and Darius Ferguson.

Mrs. Christie Dawson, Westwood principal, and Ms. Amanda Hylton of the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, served as judges. Mrs. Tia Hairston, Westwood Autism teacher, served as pronouncer.

Isaiah Carter won the competition with the word conclude, after a duel with runner-up, Tyasia Chavious. Both winners received a trophy and will advance to the district spelling bee to be held March 16 at Averett University.
