Exploring Perfect Squares

Ms. Baynes' sixth grade math students used square tiles and grid paper to explore perfect squares. Students were able to discover the mathematical meaning of a perfect square as well as the meaning of square roots through the use of these hands-on activities. At the end of the tile activity, students worked with a partner to form even bigger perfect squares by putting their tiles together. The pair of students pictured here created the perfect square 81 by combining their tiles!
