December 21-January 3

To celebrate the Holidays, we will have two shows featuring Grove Park Preschoolers singing and talking about Santa Claus, the GWHS Orchestra, the GWHS Symphony Band; School Board Members’ Holiday Greetings and New Year’s resolutions, along with scenes from the Christmas Parade.

December 14-20 It’s time to celebrate success!  Join us as we go to the elementary schools to present certificates to students that scored a perfect 600 on their SOL tests.  The good news is - there are so many perfect scores that it will take the next three weeks to cover all of the student awards.  This week we will feature Woodberry, Taylor, and Schoolfield.

November 23-29

We’re celebrating Thanksgiving by visiting Grove Park Pre School to talk with some students about Thanksgiving.  Join us to hear a discussion with 4 year olds about turkeys, pilgrims, and pumpkins.  A visit to Owens Farm is also featured.

November 16-22 This show features 4 fathers that are members of the DPS Parent Advisory Committee.  These fathers want to challenge other fathers to get involved with their children’s education.  We follow these fathers to Forest Hills, Schoolfield, and Johnson to see how they get involved.

November 9-15 Pre School through high school student art is featured in the 2010 Junior Wednesday Club Calendar.  The sale of this calendar benefits needy families and organizations in Danville.  Each month features student artwork and is an excellent example of the breadth of the art program in our schools.  Amy Cook, a member of the Junior Wednesday Club, and Sandra Marsh, art teacher, are on hand to explain how the art was selected.  You will also hear from Khary Wiles, a GWHS student and one of the featured artists.

November 2-8 Bonner Middle School sixth grade students visit the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History.  Join the students as they tour the exhibit “If Our Walls Could Talk.”  The exhibit covers 150 years of Danville history and serves as the stimulus for a student writing competition.

October 26-November 1 This show features the GWHS Cross Country Team during a practice session in Ballou Park.

October 19-25 The Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce has a new program – Junior Leadership Southside.  Lynnette Lawson, with the Chamber, and participating students from GWHS and Galileo discuss what they expect from this new program.

October 12-18 Come along with hundreds of Juniors and Seniors as they attend the 37th Annual College Night.  Approximately 75 colleges, universities, military recruiters, and financial aid organizations were on hand to provide information on the college application process.

October 5-11 Join the GWHS JV and Varsity Cheerleaders as they hold a cheerleading clinic for future cheerleaders.  Those attending the Clinic range in age from 7 to 12 years old.

September 28-October 4 Approximately 150 students took part in various summer programs sponsored by the Governor’s School.  In this show, Ellen Joyce along with middle and high school students discuss their summer experiences.

September 21-27

GWHS Marching Band is getting ready for the new school year and competition in the annual Dixie Classic on September 26.  This show demonstrates the work that goes into making those perfect performances that we enjoy.

September 14-20 The GWHS Girls Volleyball team is having a great start to the school year.  Join us for a practice session and see why they are on a 3-0 winning streak.

August 24-30 Part II of the National Night Out Celebration.

August 17-23 Part I of the National Night Out Celebration in Ballou Park.  Danville Public Schools first year participating in the Danville Police Department Night Out Against Crime was a success.  Over 200 community members were on hand to see school displays and watch student performances.  So much was happening that the event will be shown in two parts.

August 10-16 Come along on a visit to Camp Invention.  Students are making sleds with skate boards, inventing using broken appliances, learning what it takes to be a comic book super hero, and many other fun “learning” activities.

July 20-26 Johnson Elementary School held their Career Ed Day with about 50 speakers from the community to talk with the students about their respective careers.  This show features the speakers and the students talking about careers.

July 13-19 Faces of Our Children is a recently published book complied by Glenwood Elementary’s art teacher, Kate Brantley-Hawker.  The book was illustrated and written by Glenwood students.  This book will be sold nationally and all proceeds will go toward finding a cure for Sickle Cell Anemia.  The show will feature one of Ms. Hawker’s 5th grade art classes.  The students discuss what they have learned about Sickle Cell Anemia.

July 6-12 GWHS’ Euantes Coffeehouse is a celebration of original student works.  The show features students performing their original poetry, music and literature.

June 29-July 5 Join us at the K-12 Fine Arts Festival for an evening of art and entertainment as K-12 students from Danville Public Schools display their talents through a fine arts exhibit as well as musical and dramatic performances.  The evening is a celebration to mark  accomplishments achieved  by our students during the 2008-2009 school year.

May 18-24 The GWHS Career & Technical Education Department held Mock Interviews for their students.  Area businesses sent representatives to the campus to interview students.  Students prepared resumes and got to practice their interview skills.

April 6-12 Chuck Sexton and the GWHS Symphony Orchestra recently received their 24th consecutive Superior Rating at the Virginia Orchestra and Band Directors Association Festival Competition.  This show takes you inside a practice session for the competition and the concert presented to the community.

March 30-April 5 Recommendations for education included in the published report, Assessing the Economic Competitiveness of the Danville, VA Region, are discussed by Dr. Sue Davis, Superintendent, and Dr. Tiffany Franks, President of Averett University.

March 23-29 Dan Newell was named All-Metro Coach of the Year.  He talks about the team success this year and what the team looks like for the upcoming 2009 season.

This was an exciting year for the GWHS Football Team.  Since the season is over, we were able to spend some time with Coach Newell and some of the players.  Over the next three weeks, our shows will feature the players and Coach Newell.  This week, we'll interview players Tahron Goods, Patrick Clifton and Tim Harris.

February 23-March 1 Enjoy highlights from the GWHS Faculty Student Basketball Game.  The faculty walks away with a score of 42 to 32.  This show also includes an interview with GWHS graduate (and star athlete) Travis Tarpley.  Travis attended the game and spent time talking with us about his experiences at Delaware State.

February 16-22 GWHS and Langston Career & Technical Education students attended Career Day to learn more about local career opportunities, job availability, and educational requirements.

February 9-15 Michael Adkins, Director of Transportation, conducts a workshop for Galileo Magnet HS Driver’s Education students on what you need to do before driving a vehicle.  He covers preventive maintenance techniques, how to change a tire, pre-trip inspections, and safety.

February 2-8 Meet GWHS graduate, Hillary Wood.  Hillary has made a name for herself playing soccer for Averett University.  Dr. Tiffany Franks says Hillary is one of the top contributors to Averett’s record setting women’s soccer squad.  Hillary and her coach, Carly Pearce, discuss her soccer playing at GWHS and Averett University

GWHS’ ACE Team won top honors at the Northwest Regional State Competition.  Team members Chris Monioudis, Raj Clark, Ryan Dodson, Stuart Shields, Mary Bret Koplan, Saquana Clark, Brandon Dockery along with Ruby Hovatter, Head Coach, discuss the team and the competition.

June 9-15 Sharon Hughes, Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History Education Director, and Patsi Compton outline programs offered to area students during the summer.

May 26-June 1 This show features Grant Pooles’ pre school music class at Grove Park.  They sing, dance, and spell.  Grant uses words from songs to teach spelling.  These students will remind you of a time when learning was just FUN!

May 19-25 Join us at GWHS as we interview two GW students working in the Eagle Branch URW Credit Union.   Learn about this very inventive program that allows students and faculty to make deposits and withdrawals and employs students to run the office.

May 5 -11

Forest Hills Elementary was one of two schools in DPS that the State designated as a High Achieving School.  Catherine Lassiter, Principal, credits a strong team made up of teachers, parents, students and staff for the school’s success.  Meet members of this team at the Hot Dog Social, Open House, and Book Fair recently held at Forest Hills.

April 28 – May 4 

Summer activities for teachers and students are outlined by Jeff Liverman, Director of the Danville Science Center.  Teachers can earn free graduate credit hours in the Science SOLutions courses.  Summer Science Day Camps and Adventure Camps are available for students of all ages.

Apr. 21-27 The show will be on location at the After School Academic Enrichment Program.  The program serves students primarily from Forest Hills Elementary.  Students read and use a news reporting format for their book reports.  Join us to see the reports from WRTS Channel 20 News.  Also included are candid interviews with students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade.

Apr. 14-20 In Part II, we learn more about the team work that produces high achievement when we visit the after-school programs at Woodrow.  Two programs are featured, Averett Tutors and the Church-Based Tutorial Program at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
