Schoolfield Elementary's
Curriculum
Recognizing it is a fundamental skill needed for success,
reading is the primary focus of each day in all grade
levels with an average of 90 minutes of instruction each
day. Reading instruction takes place across the curriculum
in all subjects. Mathematics is also emphasized with at
least one hour each day devoted to developing an
understanding of the fundamental concepts.
Thematic units derived from
science and social studies, based on the Virginia
Standards of Learning and following the Danville Public
Schools’ pacing guides provide the structure for the
curriculum in kindergarten through third grade. Researchers
who study how children and adults learn have found that
providing the connections between subjects stimulates the
brain to build new pathways for learning.
No longer
structured solely around thematic units, the fourth and
fifth grade curriculum lays the foundation for advanced
study in the core subjects. By the time the fifth grade
students leave for middle school, they are independent
learners with excellent fundamental skills.

Schoolfield Elementary
is fully accredited by the state of Virginia Schoolfield
students had 62 perfect scores out of 266 advanced scores on
the 2009 SOL tests. |
