Learning the Charleston

On Tuesday, Mrs. Harvey and Mrs. Wallace’s seventh grade gifted classes took part in a dance seminar to facilitate learning about the Roaring Twenties. Jose Zuniga from The Dance Space taught the students the Charleston and the Lindy Hop while listening to ragtime and Big Band music.

The Charleston, named for the city in South Carolina, may be danced solo or with a partner, which made it the perfect activity to enrich the seventh grade curriculum. Zuniga also incorporated the Lindy Hop, dubbed for Charles Lindbergh’s Atlantic crossing, in 1927.

The students benefited from exposure to the arts to enhance their natural creativity, poise, and confidence. In addition, the students learned about the health benefits associated with dance.
