Teachers Collaborate for Student Achievement

     O. T. Bonner Middle School teachers were very busy on the February 15th Teacher Workday. The Math Department met at in Mrs. Gould’s room at 9:30 and the English Department met in Mrs. Rossman’s room at 10:30. The purpose of both of these meetings was for teachers to have a chance to either analyze student data or discuss new strategies to boost student achievement in both content areas.

During the math meeting, teachers were separated into grade level groups to analyze reports from the Virginia Department of Education. The VDOE published Mathematics Performance Analysis Presentations to help teachers understand the areas of weakness on last year’s math SOL tests. Teachers were able to view the presentations to identify weaknesses and then work together to create new plans and strategies to ensure students learn the necessary math skills they need to know.

During the English meeting, teachers heard presentations from their department colleagues. Mr. Salamon analyzed the list of writing prompts that were released from the VDOE and gave teachers sample rubrics to use in their classrooms to grade writing. Mrs. Wilson and Ms. Napier shared resources that teachers can use to pair passages for students to compare and contrast content, themes, or text structure. Mrs. Grantier explained the process for a practice writing test that all sixth and seventh grade students will take in March. Finally, Mrs. Nicholas gave a short presentation on the new Online Writing Tool that all eighth grade students will use to take the Writing SOL test in March.

Bonner teachers work hard and collaborate frequently to make sure students’ needs are met in the classroom. These meetings will definitely help Bonner students as they continue to achieve in the classroom daily.
