W.W. Moore

Gearing Up for 2012-2013

The faculty and staff of the W. W. Moore Education Program have been busy at the beginning of the new school year participating in staff development. The year began with the Back-to-School breakfast and faculty meeting. Faculty and guests enjoyed goodies from Biscuitville. Mrs. Michelle Johnson, Director, Mr. Tom Beam, Assistant Director, Ms. Nikia Miller, Counselor and Mr. Rick Blackstock, Post D Coordinator brought greetings from the W.W. Moore Administrative Staff. Lt. Colonel Dean Hairston from the Danville Police Department also brought greetings and best wishes for the new year. Corporal Timothy Scearce talked to the group about the impact of kindness in a student’s life. Kind words uttered by a teacher could be life changing for a student. The morning session was very informative.

On August 9, 2012, Mrs. Angie Walker, Staff Development Specialist conducted a training session for the core subject teachers on the use of blue prints, pacing guides, new SOL standards, etc. The session was interactive and beneficial to teachers as they began planning their classes.

Additionally, the entire staff participated in the State Operated Programs Conference that was held in Roanoke on August 16 - 17, 2012. The theme for the conference was “Moving Forward Together.” Approximately four hundred individuals from all State Operated Programs in Virginia including mental health and hospital facilities were in attendance. Participants were able to choose from a variety of interesting sessions to attend. The sessions were designed to be informative and motivate participants to try new strategies in their line of work.

Upon returning from the conference, each person gave a 3-5 minutes presentation to their peers about a session they found most interesting. The conference was enjoyable and the staff has already begun to utilize some of the strategies they learned
