Seasons with Ms. Harrelson

The Westwood Middle School 8th grade hearing impaired class recently completed a unit on causes for the seasons. The students discussed the definition of each season, including associated clothes, holidays, changes in nature and weather. They were then guided in an outdoor activity to measure the changing shadows as the earth begins its journey towards the winter solstice. For five days, at the same location and time, the students would measure a tree's shadow length and its location. Changes were noted by drawing pictures of their observations. We then watched several animated videos showing the earth's yearly path around the sun. The students were able to understand that the tilt of the earth and the hemispheres that this tilt affects caused the seasons. They completed a project that allowed them to create a visual representation of earth and its four seasons.
